Art >> SWORD
SWORD is a series of three-dimensional architectural reliefs mounted on the wall. Like an architectural model, the process for creating a SWORD begins with a foundation; its footprint. This is often achieved by making small sketches or doodles, at first not even looking at what I'm drawing, but simply moving the pen across the paper. I then connect different points of the various lines drawn, until I arrive at the desired form.
The two-dimensional sketch is then scaled up and brought into three dimensions through the use of foamcore, cardboard, and tape, and finished with a layer of gesso and paint; usually one color. The resulting form protrudes or “pops” from the wall. SWORDs are meant to be ambiguous and resemble different things to different people, based on their individual tendencies concerning color, shape and gesture.
The underlying principle of the SWORD series is that a small pencil or pen doodle in a notebook has been given semi-monumental status; as a form now inhabiting three dimensions and given color and texture and greatly increased presence. Unlike a doodle concealed within a book, the presence of a SWORD in the room cannot be easily overlooked.
